About King’s Cliffe Heritage

King’s Cliffe Heritage is a local group formed in 1999 with the aim of researching, gathering and recording our village heritage and creating an accessible archive both for our local community and for the wider world. Our areas of interest cover the history and social history, archaeology, geography, natural environment and architecture of our community.

Our archive collection has grown - and continues to grow - from photographs, documents, artefacts and personal knowledge shared with us by local people; as well as material gathered and researched over many years by Canon John Bryan, a former Rector of King’s Cliffe.

In 2001, with the help of local artists, we produced an illustrated village map which stands in Hall Yard in the centre of King’s Cliffe - a useful starting point for exploring the village - and a series of illustrated local walk leaflets. Three of the leaflets explore places of historical interest within the village itself, the others are circular rambles into the surrounding countryside and neighbouring villages.

In November 2004, we published a book called ‘King’s Cliffe in the Picture’ with 240 illustrations from our archives, each with an interesting story to tell about the village and its people. Click here to find out more about our Publications

In 2005 we produced ‘Village Voices of King’s Cliffe’, a self-guided audio tour of the village with a commentary and recorded reminiscences by our older residents about places of interest along the route.

We are grateful for grant funding support over the years: initially from the Awards for All’ Lottery fund to equip ourselves to create a computer-based archive, and subsequently from the ‘Local Heritage Initiative’ fund for a project called ‘Putting King’s Cliffe on the Map’.

Development of this searchable website is the final part of ‘Putting King’s Cliffe on the Map’.

The website www.kingscliffeheritage.org was launched in February 2011 and is being updated continually as new material is added.
